Fewer people, more distance, and everyone knows whose truck that is. A corner here is a gas station lot, a side road, a bar's back door or a regular's kitchen; a dealer's list is spread over towns and the product moves by car, often a long drive for a small sale. One sheriff's or provincial car can cover the whole area, so a stranger is noticed before a camera is: the doorbell cameras, the farm store's lot camera and the plate reader at the one highway ramp do the rest. Coverage drops in the low places and the mesh is a neighbour's antenna on a silo. Weather and the road decide everything: a snowed-in road closes the market for a day, a washout means the long way. Work is seasonal, shift-based or an hour's commute; the clinic and the pharmacy are far, so a doctor who makes house calls matters. Grudges, family ties and church or rink friendships run deep and travel fast; a rumour reaches every kitchen by morning. Bots and cheap drones are rarer and stranger here, and get noticed.
