The rule

Slang is rare. Most texts are plain, short and typed by someone busy: one to three lines, typos where the person would make them, no explaining. A coined word appears when it saves time between people who both know it, and a reader who has never seen it can guess it from the sentence. Everyday shorthand is not slang: lol, ngl, tbh, lmao, idk and rn come as easily as they did in the 2020s to anyone younger or looser, and are often what gives a text its person.
